Back from Clothes Show 2009
16th Dec 2009 17:35:48
It feels like some time since I contributed to the blog, but I just had to fill you all in on Clothes Show 2009. This was our second year at the show and the excitement was overcome by the worry of "How will I survive on NO sleep!" 5 hours max guys, I looked like Shrek's sis by the time the week ended.
Ce Me London was back in purple zone surrounded by lots of new exhibitors this year. The music from Superdy's stand was so painful that even Punky Fish had to (like many of us) attempt to kill it off before it killed us all off. Don't get me wrong I love music and am not a party pooper but techno really isn't relaxing when you want to shop. It was like the clash of the titans. RnB vs a mish-mash of eclectic music.
Our photographer Pawell revelled in the catwalk shows, excitedly bringing us back a heap of fabulous pictures. We have shared some of them with you on the previous blog. The crowd themselves had saved up all year searching for special finds that they normally perhaps wouldn't get from their rather familiar high streets.
Clothes Show 09 did appeal to a younger crowd this year, this could be due to the credit crunch having an impact on us all. How nice it would be to be 16-18 again and not have to worry about money eh?
Our team had great fun shopping all week and my car was loaded to its max with cute bags from the array of brands at the show. There were also lots of Ce Me London bags flying about featuring our sexy leopard dress which has now sold out. Sorry!
On a more serious note - there was clearly a search for bargains this year, and I find it upsetting that quality seems to be a thing of the past. Clothes Show has perhaps (like Marks and Spencers and their dine for 2 for £10) put aside values that I feel made Britain years ago. I spoke to lots of visitors at the show and the general consensus was that everything seemed to look the "same" and Ce Me London was "different". I took a walk around the show myself to try and understand what they meant by this. My observations brought me to the conclusion that fashion is slowly becoming a clone machine. There wasn't much that jumped out at me and as a confessed shopaholic I returned to London with magazine goody bags that were the highlight of the show for me personally. I am a kid at heart and loved the little surprises in with the magazines.
Clothes Show used to represent an elite group of designers from all over UK that were given an opportunity to showcase their talents to the eagerly awaiting public.
Today young designers are leaving colleges with immense talent, yet have very few opportunities as China takes over the fashion world with its demand for "cheap products".
Has British fashion fallen foul to this invasion? I know that here at Ce Me London we just don't " do China," we pride ourselves on creating garments here in the UK and working with UK designers, giving them a chance. We have our wonderful Lesley here who is doing an amazing job from our very own elite Central Saint Martins College in London.
You may sense my disappointment but I feel rather more "upset" because young designers are being pushed into menial jobs that don't warrant their gifts of creativity. I feel rather tearful at the thought of what 2010 may bring for the fashion world. I will perhaps keep you updated on the changing face of fashion from the real world. The magazines dictate fashion and celebrities have become celebrities through their stylists talents to pick the right designer styling alone. Who is the celebrity here? The icon, the stylist or the designer? Lets see what 2010 brings................
